The Canton of Ticino is located in southern Switzerland, and its capital is Bellinzona. The canton covers a surface of 2812 km² and has a population of 336,943 (status: December 2011; wikipedia.org).

Bellinzona is located in the valley plain east of the River Ticino at the foot of the Saint-Gotthard Massif and, after Lugano, is the second largest city in the canton. Bellinzona has 17,544 inhabitants and spreads over a surface of 19.1 km² (status: December 2011; wikipedia.org). The city’s landmarks – the three castles of Bellinzona along with the Murata fortifications – have been World Heritage Sites since 2000.
